Export LCL and air freight

Freight Lodge quotes and books export shipments with licensed forwarding partners. Here is how the two main options compare.

LCL ocean

Less-than-container-load. Your cargo is consolidated with other shippers' cargo in one container. Usually the lower-cost option for a few pallets, with longer transit times.

Air freight

Faster transit, usually priced on the greater of actual or volumetric (dimensional) weight. A fit for urgent, high-value, or lighter shipments.

Export document checklist

Exact requirements depend on the goods, the destination country, and the shipment. These are the common ones:

  • Commercial invoice: seller, buyer, goods, values, and terms of sale.
  • Packing list: what is in each package, with weights and dimensions.
  • Bill of lading (ocean) or air waybill (air): the transport document and receipt for the cargo.
  • Certificate of origin: where the goods were made, when the destination requires it.
  • Electronic Export Information (EEI): filed in AES for US exports when required, for example most shipments valued over $2,500 per Schedule B number or needing a license.
  • Power of attorney: lets a forwarder file and act on your behalf.
  • Export license: only for controlled goods or destinations.
